Vented Logs

Vented Troubleshooting

Problem: Sooting
If you have a chimney cap, sooting will occur
If excess soot on logs, separate logs or remove one or more

Solution:
For Liquid Propane (LP)
  • Make sure flue is a minimum of 8" and the damper is wide open.Make sure the correct covering medium is being used (vermiculite) and completely covering burner pan.If you are using vermiculite, make sure the orifice is on the correct way (holes facing away from the burner pan and the holes are exposed).If all of the above is correct, make sure that the regulator on the LP gas tank is set between 11" and 13", water column = ½ psi.
  • Make sure that the fireplace was cleaned prior to using the gas logs.

    **Note: due to the weight of LP gas, more sooting will occur than with NG.
    ***If the set is a Topside burner, make sure the top bar is covered with glowing embers.

For Natural Gas (NG)
  • Make sure flue is a minimum of 8" and the damper is wide open.Make sure the correct covering medium is being used. NG granules should cover the burner pan completely.Make sure that the burner is as far back in the fireplace as possible.
  • Make sure that the fireplace was cleaned prior to using the gas logs.

Problem: Pilot Light Will Not Light or Stay Lit

Solution:
  • Make sure that the main gas line is turned on.Make sure that the pilot adjustment screw is turned 2 complete turns to the left and that there are no kinks in the pilot supply line.If the unit has just been installed, or the gas has been off for a while, you need to bleed the line to get all the air out of the gas line. LP takes longer than NG.
    To bleed your gas line, turn knob from off to pilot. Push the control knob all the way in and hold. Immediately light the pilot with a match. Continue to hold the control knob in for about one (1) minute after the pilot is lit.
  • On AGA LP units, make sure that the tanks regulator is set between 11" and 13", water column = ½ psi (the regulator on the unit is only able to handle ½ psi. Any more than that and gas will not flow).

Problem: AGA Unit will not Stay Lit

Solution:
  • Make sure the pilot flame is engulfing the thermocouple and that the knob has been held in long enough to allow the thermocouple to heat.
  • If the above is correct, you may need to adjust the thermocouple: Follow the copper line from the base of the thermocouple to where it feeds into the back of the control valve. You will find a 3/16" brass nut that holds this in place. Loosen the nut and then tighten it back finger tight plus ¼ turn with a wrench.

Problem: Whistling Noise from the Log Set

Solution:
  • If you are using a flex tube, the combination of the ridges in the flex tube and the flow of the gas will produce a whistling noise. This cannot be stopped. Use the straight tube that came with your set.Make sure the medium covers the entire burner system, and verify the correct medium is being used. (LP- vermiculite; Natural - lava granules)If natural gas is being used, and the entire burner pan is covered with lava granules, replace it with silica sand.
  • Check gas line pressure. (Excess pressure causes burner noises.) You may turn down the pressure at your main valve. Natural gas inlet pressure- 5" to 7" water column
    Liquid Propane gas inlet pressure- 11" water column.
    (Call gas supplier to measure)
If the log set has a pilot valve light attached, the brass orifice that screws into the burner orifice may be on backwards.

Problem: Log set won't Produce Heat

Solution:
Although gas logs do radiate more heat than a wood fire, most of the heat goes up the chimney. These are designed to serve as a decorative log set only.

Problem: Gas Smell

Solution:
Check for leaks with soap and water solution. Drip or spray it on areas of gas flow connections. If this produces air bubbles, there is a gas leak. Tighten fittings and make sure pipe dope is on male threads.

Problem: The unit soots and/or has a bad odor

Solution:
  • For the first 6 - 12 hours of initial burning there will be an odor.
  • Make sure that the unit purchased is compatible with the gas type being used in the home.
    - Check the regulator:
    Silver = NG
    Red = LP
    Blue = TTB NG
